NYC Data #64: Recommender Systems at Amazon, Venmo, Rent the Runway, Probabilistic Programming, Squarespace, Dotdash, Spring, SNAP Interactive
Hi friends: I hope you're surviving the heat. As always, let me know if you have recommendations of posts, jobs or events for me to include. Also, this is the 2^6th edition of the NYC Data newsletter! I'm very excited to be adding another bit to the register next week.
Junior Roles
Squarespace is looking for a Data Analyst: I know a few people there who have really liked it. They also may have the nicest offices I've ever seen.
Spring is looking for a Data Scientist.
Dotdash is looking for a Junior Data Scientist to work on NLP.
Venmo (I mean, really, Paypal) is looking for a Data Engineer.
Mid-Level Roles
Rent the Runway is looking for a Senior Manager, Research and Consumer Insights.
SNAP Interactive is hiring a Data Scientist.

Good Local Posts
- The Tow Center put out a long analysis of computational campaign coverage in 2016. I found some of the conclusions a little hard to swallow, including the in-sample error rate for their algorithm (when out of sample error was 70% higher), but there's lots of good stuff here.
- Mike Williams of Fast Forward Labs did a gentle intro to probabilistic programming.
- Jeremy Stanley wrote about some of the problem set for the data science team at Instacart, with some snazzy visualizations.
Miscellany
- I loved this piece on recommender systems at Amazon: accessible and thoughtful. I'm hoping to write up my perspectives.
- I liked the anti-patterns in this piece on evaluating data products a lot.
