Sam Bail released a new LinkedIn Learning course: Data Quality Testing with Great Expectations. We tried Great Expectations at my previous role but it didn’t stick, and I’m not totally sure why. I’m interested in seeing if there were other ways we could have used it that would have been more effective.
I read this post about leaving Github a few months ago. The author was primarily motivated by political reasons, but recently some influential people in the developer community (Mitchell Hashimoto of Hashicorp & Ghostty, Armin Ronacher of Flask/Jinja fame) are talking about leaving due to performance gaps and lack of reliability. Ronacher’s piece in particular struck me: I remember pre-Github and I wonder and worry about what a more decentralized open source community looks like.
Adam Virani and Lukas Goetz-Weiss had an interesting piece on Datadog’s blog about the different timelines of product data signals, and the different owners of each pathway. I like the ‘Pulse / Pain / Proof’ framework.

Miscellany
Ben Thompson shared this X post referencing The Economist piece ‘How Europe regulated itself into American vassalage’ (behind a paywall but you can read for free by registering). One thing I’ve noticed in my lifetime is how much less expensive ‘high-end’ things in Europe have become (eg I know several people who flew to Europe to see Taylor Swift or go to theme parks because it was so much cheaper than here). I don’t reflexively think of that change being downstream of policy decisions, but it almost certainly is to some extent. See some GDP per capita numbers over time here.
Kubetorch builder and local startup Runhouse has been acquired by Anthropic. Congrats to Donny and the crew!
