NYC Data #330: NYC Ballot Initiatives, ML for Content Moderation, Runway, CNN, Colgate, Prediction Markets
Hi friends: an early Happy Halloween to you all! IMO this is the (only?) holiday that is more fun in NYC than anywhere else. It also kicks off a busy two weeks: by the time I send my next letter we’ll be on the other side of the NYC Marathon and the election as well.
As always, help me keep this space up-to-date: please send me posts, events, and job openings. [image credit: Karen Rubin]
Good Local Posts
Speaking of the election: lots of interesting data analysis focused on it! I’ve mostly been following along with Nate Silver’s newsletter, and Nate Cohn at The Upshot has had a lot of great insight as well.
David Azcona of Etsy wrote about using ML for Content Moderation across both text and images.
Andrew Gelman has an in-depth summary on a paper about prediction markets and some thoughts on why they aren’t more accepted or more popular.

Miscellany
The Election is coming up! NYC’s Poll Site Locator is handy if you’ve moved recently, and you can look at a sample ballot at Vote411. There are 6 (six!) ballot measures on the ballot in NYC: the first one is a statewide one about abortion. You can read about the other five here: FWIW, I’m voting ‘No’ on 3-6, and am undecided on #2 (will make up my mind this weekend).
Really interesting deep-dive in The Upshot about Minimum Parking Mandates in NYC and some practical considerations around them.
