NYC Data #292: Data Mishaps Night, ML latency, Measuring the Value of a Data Team, Ronald McDonald House, Federal Reserve, Forbes, Housing Development Corporation
Hi friends: happy Friday and happy long weekend! I usually joke that 2 Mondays from now is the day when you momentarily panic about weekly metrics because you forgot there was a holiday last week. I hope you're one of the people changing your routine and taking some time off.
I'll be watching Data Mishaps Night on Thursday: hope to see you there! As always, please send me posts, events & jobs. Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for jobs openings last time!

Good Local Posts
- Sallie Walecka, Kyle Gallatin write about ML support at Etsy, specifically about tracking model latency earlier in the development process, and improving it in production. This is really cool: I have seem latency dominate the relevance gains of rec systems in a previous role, and really struggled to figure out how to make improvements.
- TheCity is investigating the disappearance of rent stabilized apartments (and maintaining a nifty map with data from JustFix) and is looking for examples of apartments illegally becoming unstabilized.
- A team at Spotify published a post about their use of Ray to support ML workloads.
Miscellany
- This piece on 'Data team as % of workforce' is really useful, though it focuses on Europe. The Data is taken from LinkedIn, so I think it's reasonable to be a bit skeptical, but I don't think there's a reason to expect significant bias in who is represented there, so I am cautiously happy to use it.
- Thoughtful piece from Anna Geller of Prefect on Measuring the Value of a Data Team. A good summary of some current thoughts, and some metrics that are probably better or worse for you.
